Website Privacy & HIPAA Notice

Your privacy matters. This notice explains how information is handled when you visit or contact me through this website, and how protected health information (PHI) is handled once you become a client, under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) and Maryland law.

This website is informational

Visiting this website or sending a message does not create a therapist–client relationship. That relationship begins only after a consultation, an intake process, informed consent, and my confirmation that I am accepting you as a client.

Communications before services begin

The contact form, email, and voicemail are not secure ways to send protected health information. Please keep your first message to general information, such as your name, how to reach you, and a few words about what you are looking for, and leave out clinical or sensitive details. Once you become a client, I will give you secure, HIPAA-compliant ways to communicate and a secure video platform for sessions.

Information collected through this website

If you use the contact form, I receive your name, email address, phone number (if you choose to give it), preferred way to be reached, and the message you write. I use this only to respond to you, answer questions, and arrange a consultation. It is not used for treatment, diagnosis, or therapy, and I do not sell it or use it for marketing.

Telehealth only

Therapy is offered by telehealth only, to clients located in Maryland at the time of the session.

Protected health information

Once you are a client, your PHI is used and disclosed only as HIPAA and Maryland law permit or require: for treatment, payment, health care operations, and legal or regulatory obligations. Maryland law on the confidentiality of mental health records, including the Maryland Confidentiality of Medical Records Act, may give you greater protection than federal law. A full Notice of Privacy Practices is given to you during intake and is available on request.

Third-party services

This website is built and hosted on Squarespace. Squarespace also processes and stores the messages you send through the contact form, which are then delivered to my email. Squarespace and my email provider may collect limited technical data, such as browser type and general usage statistics. They do not have access to therapy records. Because your message passes through these services, please do not include sensitive information in the form.

No emergency services

This website and my messages are not monitored continuously and are not appropriate for emergencies. If you are experiencing a mental health emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. You can also call or text 988, the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.

Your privacy rights

As a client, you have the right to:

  • Request access to your health records

  • Request corrections to your records

  • Request restrictions on certain uses or disclosures

  • Request confidential communications

  • Receive an accounting of certain disclosures

  • Receive a copy of the full Notice of Privacy Practices

These rights are explained in the Notice of Privacy Practices.
